A direct vent gas fireplace draws combustion air from outside and exhausts outside through a sealed pipe. It heats efficiently, keeps indoor air clean, and needs no chimney — which is why it has become the standard for new and remodeled homes. Every fireplace and insert Lumiflares carries is direct vent, so the question is not whether to go direct vent, but which model fits your room.

Best for large and great rooms: Kingsman ZCVRB60 Linear 60
If you have a great room, a tall ceiling, or an open floor plan, the ZCVRB60 is the headliner: a five-foot clean-face ribbon of flame with no louvers or visible frame, at 35,000 BTU.
Be clear about what that means. It is the highest-output built-in Lumiflares carries and genuinely strong supplemental heat — but at roughly 55–57% efficiency it is not a furnace substitute in a cold-climate great room. You are paying for the 61-inch viewing area. Plan for a 66 9/16" x 43" rough opening, and for up to 200 sq in of enclosure ventilation if you want cool-touch walls. Best heat per dollar: Kingsman IDV44 insert
Here is the comparison that surprises people. The IDV44 produces 34,250 BTU at 60–62% efficiency — within 750 BTU of the 60-inch linear, at roughly half the price, with no new framing.
The catch is that it needs an existing masonry fireplace with a minimum opening of 32 7/8" W x 25 3/4" H x 18" D. If you have that opening, this is the most heat per dollar in the lineup.
Best traditional flame with real output: Kingsman ZCV39 Clean View
The ZCV39 pairs a realistic log set with a tall 33" x 28 9/16" viewing area. Specify ceramic glass and it reaches 28,000 BTU at roughly 64–66% efficiency — more heat, better efficiency, and a far taller flame than the wider ZCVRB47 linear.
The glass choice is the decision: tempered runs 25,000 BTU at about 53–55%, ceramic 28,000 BTU at about 64–66%. If heat matters, pay for ceramic.
Best modern look for a standard living room: Kingsman ZCVRB47 Linear 47
For the average living room, the ZCVRB47 gives a wide contemporary clean-face flame at 24,500 BTU on both fuels, with a 41 5/8" x 15 7/8" viewing area. Choose it for the look. If you want more heat in a similar footprint, the ZCV39 above delivers it from a narrower unit.
Best classic look: Kingsman HB4224 and HB4228
Not every home wants a linear flame. The HB4224 delivers the timeless look of a wood fire — louvered face, dual burner, decorative log set, glowing ember bed — at 24,000 BTU natural gas with a 37" x 23 15/16" viewing area. The ceramic-glass HB4228 steps that to 28,000 BTU in the same footprint.
Best for open-concept homes: Kingsman Clean View 43 See-Through
When a partition wall separates two living spaces, the Clean View 43 See-Through (MCVST42) lets both rooms share one fire at 30,500 BTU, across a 37 1/16" x 32 1/2" viewing area on each face.
Two things to plan for: that output serves two rooms rather than one, and it needs the tallest rough opening in the range at 43 1/8" x 51 3/8" x 23 1/16". Details in the see-through guide.
Best compact options
For bedrooms and offices you can scale down without losing the look. The ZCV36 Clean View offers a traditional log-set fire at 18,000 BTU and 60–63% efficiency; the ZCVRB36 Linear gives a modern clean-face flame at 17,500 BTU and 61–66% — the most efficient linear in the range. Both frame into the same 36 3/8" opening.
Working with an existing small opening instead? The IDV26 reaches 30,000 BTU at 65–67% efficiency, and the IDV24 fits openings as small as 24 1/4" x 18 1/2" x 14".
How to choose
Answer three questions in order. First: are you framing into a wall, or converting an existing masonry fireplace? That splits the list cleanly — the zero-clearance vs. insert guide covers it. Third: which look — wide modern linear, traditional louvered, or double-sided?
Only then does width matter. Choosing on width first is how people end up with a 60-inch fireplace that underheats their great room.

Are linear gas fireplaces good heaters?
They are better focal points than heaters. A 36-inch linear produces 17,500 BTU while a 44-inch insert produces 34,250 BTU. Choose linear for the look, traditional or insert designs for heat.
Does ceramic glass make a difference?
A large one. On the ZCV39, ceramic raises maximum input from 25,000 to 28,000 BTU and efficiency from roughly 53% to roughly 66%. On the HB42 series it lifts 24,000 to 28,000 BTU.
Do direct vent gas fireplaces work during a power outage?
Kingsman specifies that both Millivolt and IPI valve systems operate during a power failure with heat and flame adjustment. Fan kits require power and will not run.
