Dimplex Revillusion vs Ignite Evolve: Traditional Firebox or Slim Linear?

Short answer: Choose the Dimplex Revillusion if you want a traditional hearth: a deep firebox with logs and a brick interior. Choose the Ignite Evolve if you want a slim, modern ribbon of flame, usually under a TV. They put out similar heat. The real deciders are the look and the wall depth: the Revillusion needs about 12 1/2 in., the Evolve 5 1/2 in.

1. The look

The Revillusion is built to pass for a real fireplace. You look through the flames to a brick or concrete interior, with logs and a glowing ember bed in front. It belongs in a mantel surround or anywhere a traditional fireplace would go.

The Evolve is a long, low band of flame over driftwood and glass media, with seven flame color themes. It is designed for media walls and contemporary rooms, and it comes in 50, 60, 74 and 100 in. widths.

2. The wall

This is where most plans are decided. The Revillusion needs a cavity about 12 1/2 in. deep, so it goes into a chase, a bump-out, cabinetry or an old fireplace opening. The Evolve needs 5 1/2 in. to sit flush, which is a 2x6 wall, or 3 1/2 in. in a 2x4 wall with its trim kit.

If you are replacing an existing fireplace, the Revillusion's shape usually suits the opening better. If you are adding a fireplace to a flat wall, the Evolve is far easier to build in. See our Evolve planning guide and the Revillusion size guide.

3. The heat

There is little between them. On a 120 V circuit the Evolve has a slightly larger heater; at 240 V the two are almost identical at about 2,500 W. Both are supplemental heat, and both let you run the flame with the heater off. Our electrical requirements guide explains the wiring.

4. Where it can go, and the warranty

The Evolve is approved for covered outdoor use as well as indoors, and carries a five-year limited warranty indoors. The Revillusion is indoor only, with a two-year limited warranty.

5. Price

The Revillusion 36 costs about $878 less than the Evolve 50. Wider Evolve models cost more.

Frequently asked questions

Which is more realistic?

They aim at different things. The Revillusion imitates a wood fire in a masonry firebox. The Evolve is a contemporary linear flame and does not try to look like a log fire.

Which gives more heat?

At 240 V they are nearly the same, about 2,500 W. At 120 V the Evolve is 1,500 W and the Revillusion 1,300 W.

Which is easier to install?

The Evolve in a new flat wall, because it is much shallower. The Revillusion in an existing fireplace opening or a deep surround.

Do either need venting?

No. Both are electric and need no vent, chimney or gas line.
