Short answer: A Dimplex Ignite Evolve sits fully flush only in a wall with 5 1/2 in. of framing depth, which means 2x6 studs or a built-out chase. In a standard 2x4 wall it recesses 3 1/2 in. and the optional trim kit covers the rest. Decide that, the voltage and what goes above the fireplace before the wall is framed.
Step 1: check the wall depth
Every Ignite Evolve, from 50 in. to 100 in., is 5 3/4 in. deep. Dimplex gives two framing depths:
| Install | Framing depth | Wall it suits | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flush | 5 1/2 in. | 2x6 studs, or a 2x4 wall with a built-out chase | Face sits flush with the finished wall; can be finished without trim |
| Partly recessed | 3 1/2 in. | Standard 2x4 studs | Unit projects from the wall; the optional trim kit finishes the edge |
Dimplex notes that the flush install can be finished without trim, with stone, brick or other solid finish materials brought up to the unit. If you are building a media wall from scratch, framing it in 2x6 is the simplest way to get the clean, edgeless look.
Step 2: frame the opening
For the Evolve 50 the opening is 50 5/8 in. wide and 16 in. high. The other sizes use the same height and depth, with a wider opening; take the width from the specification sheet for your size. If you are cutting into an existing wall, have a builder confirm the header.
Step 3: choose the voltage before the electrician arrives
| 120 V | 240 V | |
|---|---|---|
| Heater | 1,500 W / 5,118 BTU | 2,500 W / 8,530 BTU |
| Current | 12.5 A | 10.4 A |
| Wiring | 3-wire; hardwire or optional plug kit | 4-wire; hardwire |
The flame looks the same either way. The voltage only changes the heat. If the fireplace is mostly for ambiance, 120 V is enough. If you want it to warm the room, run 240 V while the wall is open, because changing it later means reopening the wall. Circuit sizing is your electrician's call under local code; our electrical requirements guide explains what to ask for.
Step 4: plan what goes above it
The Evolve's heat comes out of the top front of the unit. Dimplex's manual includes an overhang diagram for mantels, televisions and artwork above the fireplace, and it tells you to follow the television maker's own guidance for mounting over a heater. Before you set the TV height:
- Check the overhang clearances in the Dimplex manual for your size.
- Check the TV manufacturer's instructions for mounting above a heat source.
- Remember you can run the flame with the heat off, which is how many people use a media-wall fireplace most of the year.

Step 5: decide indoors or covered outdoors
The Evolve is approved for indoor and covered outdoor installation. The warranty is five years indoors and one year in a covered outdoor location.
A short checklist for your builder
- Wall depth: 5 1/2 in. for flush, or 3 1/2 in. with the trim kit.
- Opening: 16 in. high, width per the spec sheet (50 5/8 in. for the 50).
- Power: 120 V or 240 V, on a circuit sized by the electrician.
- Above the unit: clearances from the Dimplex manual and the TV maker.
- Finish: with trim, or solid finish materials for a trimless look.
Frequently asked questions
Can an Ignite Evolve go in a 2x4 wall?
Yes, partly recessed at 3 1/2 in. with the optional trim kit. It will not sit flush.
Does a bigger Evolve need a deeper wall?
No. All sizes are 5 3/4 in. deep.
Is 240 V worth it?
Only if you want the heat. It raises the heater from 1,500 W to 2,500 W and does not change the flame.
Can I mount a TV above it?
Many people do. Follow the overhang clearances in the Dimplex manual and the TV maker's guidance for mounting above a heater.
