Short answer: The Dimplex Ignite XL is a slim, front-facing linear fireplace for a flat wall. The Ignite XL Bold is a taller, deeper version with glass on three sides, built for corners, bays and walls that project into the room. They have the same heater. Choose the XL for a flush media wall and the Bold when the fire should be seen from the sides as well.

Specifications from Dimplex's published data for each model, as listed on our product pages. Prices as of October 2026.
1. Where the fireplace sits in the room
The XL is made to disappear into a flat wall, usually under a TV. You see it from the front.
The Bold has glass on the front and both ends. Built into a corner, it shows fire along two walls. Built as a bay, it projects from the wall and is visible from three directions. It can also be installed front-facing if you want the taller glass without the side views.
2. The wall it needs
This is the practical difference. The XL is under 6 in. deep and frames at 5 1/2 in., so it fits flush in a 2x6 wall. The Bold is 12 1/8 in. deep and almost 24 in. tall, so it needs a chase, a bump-out or a purpose-built enclosure. Framing for the Bold depends on whether it is a front, corner or bay install, so take it from the Dimplex installation guide; we can send the detail for your layout.
3. Heat
Both have the same heater, and it does not change with size. Neither is a reason to choose one over the other. See our electrical requirements guide.
4. Price
At 74 in. the Bold costs about $1,900 more than the XL. The Bold's enclosure is also more work to frame and finish, because up to three faces are exposed.
Which should you choose?
- Choose the Ignite XL if the fireplace is going flush into a flat media wall and will be seen from the front. Read the Ignite XL 74 review or see the XL 74.
- Choose the Ignite XL Bold if it is going in a corner, a bay or a wall that projects into an open plan, or you want a taller fire. See the XL Bold 74.
If you want a three-sided gas fireplace instead, compare the options in see-through vs peninsula.
