Electric Fireplace Electrical Requirements: 120V vs 240V, Dedicated Circuits, and Where the Outlet Goes

Verified against the current Dimplex Ignite XL installation manual (7215520100R06). Figures below are for the Ignite XL series unless noted. Other series differ — check your model's manual, or send us the model number and we'll confirm it.

The short answer

Most freestanding and plug-in electric fireplaces run on an ordinary 120V household outlet and need no electrical work at all. Built-in linear fireboxes are the ones that need planning. They are designed to be hardwired, and most are dual-voltage: run one at 120V and you get roughly 5,100 BTU; run the same unit at 240V and you get roughly 8,500 BTU. Same fireplace, same width, same flame — the voltage decision is what changes the heat.

You do not automatically need a dedicated circuit. You need one if the fireplace will share a circuit with enough other load to trip the breaker, and you will need a new circuit run from the panel if you choose 240V. That decision has to be made before the wall is framed, because the wiring has to be in place before the firebox goes in.

The number that changes everything: 120V vs 240V

The Ignite XL series is rated for either 120V (3-wire) or 240V (4-wire) supply. Its power draw is 1,500 watts at 120V and 2,500 watts at 240V.

Here is the part worth sitting with, because it contradicts almost everything else written about sizing electric fireplaces: those figures are the same whether you buy the 50-inch or the 100-inch unit. The XLF50, XLF60, XLF74 and XLF100 all carry the identical electrical rating. Width buys you presence, not warmth. If you want more heat from an electric fireplace, the only lever is voltage.

Which should you choose? A rough guide:

  • 120V is usually enough when the fireplace is ambience plus a bit of supplemental warmth in a room your furnace already heats, or when running a new circuit would mean opening finished walls.
  • 240V earns its cost in rooms your heating system struggles with — a bonus room over a garage, a walk-out basement, a space with a lot of glass or a vaulted ceiling — or where you genuinely intend the fireplace to carry the room on milder days.

Neither of these is a whole-house heating solution. An electric fireplace at 240V puts out roughly a third of what a mid-size direct vent gas fireplace does. Plug in, wall switch, or hardwire?

Built-in fireboxes typically ship set up for hardwiring, with a plug kit as an option. Three configurations are standard on the Ignite XL:

  • 120V hardwire — the firebox is wired directly into a junction box. Cleanest finish, no visible cord.
  • 120V with a wall switch — same wiring, with a single-pole on/off switch rated for at least 15 amps in the run. Useful if you want a light-switch kill for the whole unit.
  • 240V hardwire — requires a 4-wire supply. There is no plug option at 240V.

That last point catches people out. The plug kit is a 120V-only option. If you want 240V, hardwiring is the only path, and it needs a double-pole breaker and a new run from the panel.

One more thing that is easy to get wrong: these units are not intended for use with an extension cord. If you are going the plug route, the cord goes directly into a properly grounded receptacle.

Do you actually need a dedicated circuit?

Most articles on this subject say yes, flatly. The manual is more precise than that, and the difference matters if you are trying to avoid unnecessary electrical work.

Dimplex recommends a dedicated, properly fused 15-amp circuit rated for the voltage you are using. It becomes required if, after installation, the breaker trips or the fuse blows regularly while the heater runs — which is the manual's way of saying that the answer depends on what else is on that circuit.

The arithmetic is straightforward. A 1,500W unit at 120V draws about 12.5 amps. A 15-amp circuit is generally loaded to no more than 80% of its rating for a continuous load, which is 12 amps. So a 1,500W fireplace is already at or slightly past the comfortable ceiling of a 15-amp circuit on its own. Add a lamp, a TV and a subwoofer to the same circuit and you will be resetting a breaker on the first cold evening.

In practice: if you are framing a new wall anyway, run the dedicated circuit. The incremental cost while the studs are open is small, and it removes the single most common post-installation complaint.

What "dedicated circuit" actually means

This is the most common misunderstanding we hear, so it is worth being plain about it. A dedicated circuit is one that runs from its own breaker in your panel to one appliance and nothing else. Flip that breaker and only the fireplace goes dark.

An outlet with nothing else plugged into it is not the same thing. Most receptacles in a house are daisy-chained — several outlets, sometimes a light or two, all on one breaker. An empty outlet on a shared circuit is still a shared circuit. If you are not sure which you have, your electrician can tell you in about two minutes.

Where the outlet goes — and the rule almost nobody mentions

Buried in the safety instructions of the Ignite XL manual is a line that has real consequences for how you lay out a wall. Dimplex instructs: Do not locate the heater immediately below a fixed socket-outlet.

Read that again with a media wall in mind. The standard media wall layout puts the fireplace at chest height and a receptacle above it for the television — which means, from the fireplace's point of view, a fixed socket-outlet directly overhead. That is precisely the arrangement the manual tells you to avoid.

The reasoning is not mysterious. These units vent warm air out of the top or top-front. A receptacle sitting in that airstream is being heated continuously, every evening, for years.

The fix is not complicated, but it has to happen at rough-in, not after drywall:

  • Offset the TV receptacle laterally rather than centering it directly above the firebox
  • Or recess it into the cavity behind the television, out of the direct heat path
  • Confirm the placement against your specific model's manual before the electrician leaves

Heat above the unit

While we are on the subject of what sits overhead: the Ignite XL manual maps the zone above the fireplace into three temperature bands — areas that exceed 149°F, areas that exceed 104°F, and areas below 104°F. Anything temperature-sensitive that will hang above the fireplace, a television or artwork included, should be placed according to its own manufacturer's guidance for mounting above a heat source, checked against those bands.

That is a more useful instruction than the "leave 8 to 12 inches" advice repeated across the internet, which is a number with no particular model behind it.

The rough-in checklist

Print this, or send it to whoever is doing the work. Every item has to be settled before the wall closes.

  1. Voltage decided. 120V or 240V — and if 240V, a 4-wire supply and a double-pole breaker.
  2. Circuit decided. Dedicated or shared, and if shared, what else is on it.
  3. Connection method decided. Hardwire, hardwire with wall switch, or 120V plug kit.
  4. Wire routed to the right side. On the Ignite XL, the wiring entry is at the bottom right of the firebox. Frame accordingly.
  5. Slack left. At least 18 inches of supply wire, so the connection can be made with the firebox pulled forward.
  6. Receptacles placed. Nothing fixed directly above the unit.
  7. Framing confirmed. 2x6 for a flush install; 2x4 works partially recessed with the optional trim kit. The framed opening is roughly 5/8 inch wider than the nominal model size — the 50-inch unit needs a 50-5/8 inch opening, not 50 inches.
  8. Position checked. Bottom of the unit at least 5 inches off the floor, top at least 24 inches below the ceiling.

Three situations with extra rules

Bathrooms. If the fireplace goes in a bathroom, it must be protected by a GFCI receptacle or circuit, and if a receptacle is used it has to remain readily accessible.

Covered outdoor spaces. Some electric fireplaces are rated for sheltered outdoor installation, but the shelter has to be real. Dimplex applies a proportional test for warranty purposes on outdoor-rated Ignite XL units: the height from the bottom of the fireplace to the underside of the overhang must be no more than three times the overhang's projection. An overhang nine feet above the firebox has to extend at least three feet outward on every side. A ground-fault protected circuit is recommended. Note also that outdoor installation carries a shorter warranty than indoor.

Flame without heat. If you want the fireplace purely as a visual element — a bedroom, a hotel-style installation, a room that is already warm — the heater can be switched off from the controls, and on the Ignite XL it can also be permanently disabled at the control board. That does not change the wiring requirement, but it may change which voltage is worth paying for.

Common questions

Can I plug a built-in electric fireplace into a normal outlet?

Often yes, at 120V, using the manufacturer's plug kit — but not with an extension cord, and not at 240V. Check whether your specific model ships with a plug option or is hardwire-only.

Will 240V double my heat?

Close to it. On the Ignite XL, 240V takes output from about 5,118 BTU to about 8,530 BTU — roughly a 67% increase, not a literal doubling.

Does a wider fireplace produce more heat?

No. Within the Ignite XL series, every width carries the same electrical rating and the same output. This is the single biggest misconception in the category.

Can I convert an existing 120V outlet to 240V?

Not by swapping the receptacle. A 240V supply needs different conductors and a double-pole breaker, which normally means a new run from the panel. This is why the decision has to happen before finishing work.

What size breaker do I need?

A 15-amp circuit rated for the appropriate voltage is the manufacturer's baseline recommendation. Your electrician sizes the conductors to local code for the actual load.

Do local codes override this?

Electrical installation has to comply with applicable local and national codes and utility requirements, and codes vary by jurisdiction. The manual sets the appliance's requirements; your local code and a licensed electrician govern how they are met. Where the two differ, the stricter one wins.

Before you order

The electrical decision is genuinely easier to make before you buy than after, because it changes which model makes sense. If you cannot run 240V, there is no point paying for a unit whose main advantage is 240V output.
