We sell both gas and electric fireplaces, so we have no particular stake in talking you into either one. What we can tell you is that electric fits far more homes than most people assume — and that it is genuinely the wrong answer for some.
Here's the honest version of the comparison.
Where Electric Genuinely Wins
Placement freedom
This is the big one. The single hardest constraint on a gas fireplace isn't the firebox — it's where the vent can terminate. Every gas installation is a negotiation between where you want the fireplace and where the vent run can realistically go. Electric removes that negotiation entirely. No vent, no gas line, no chimney. Primary bedrooms, high-rise condos, home offices, finished basements, interior walls with nothing but drywall behind them — all of it becomes available.
Flame without heat
Nearly every modern electric fireplace runs its flame effect independently of the heating element. That means the focal point works in July. A gas fireplace running for ambiance in August is putting real heat into the room whether you want it or not.
A dramatically smaller installation project
A gas installation means framing, a gas line, a vent run, permits, and a final inspection — typically one to five days of work, as our guide to gas fireplace installation sets out. An electric installation is framing and electrical. Faster, less invasive, and less expensive to get finished.
Buildings that won't allow gas
Many condo boards and high-rise buildings prohibit new gas appliances outright, and a growing number of jurisdictions restrict new gas connections in new construction. Electric is generally permitted where gas isn't — though you should always confirm your specific building's rules before you buy.

We'd rather tell you this now than have you order the wrong thing.
Real heating capacity
A standard 120V electric fireplace draws around 1,500 watts, which works out to roughly 5,000 BTU per hour — real supplemental warmth for a bedroom or office, but zone heat, not room heat. The Kingsman direct vent units we carry run from roughly 20,000 to 45,000 BTU. If the fireplace is meant to actually heat a great room, that gap matters. Some larger electric models offer 240V operation for more output; check the specification rather than assuming, and see electric fireplace electrical requirements for what each type needs.
Power outages
A millivolt-ignition gas fireplace lights and runs with no electricity at all. In an area with frequent winter outages, that's not a nice-to-have. Real fire
Electric flame effects have improved enormously — multi-layer projection, LCD rear panels, water vapor. Some of them are startling in person. But none of them is combustion, and some people can tell. If that matters to you, it will keep mattering.
What to Confirm Before You Commit to Electric
- The circuit. Most plug-in units want a dedicated 120V circuit. Larger and dual-voltage models may need 240V and a licensed electrician — decide this before drywall.
- Recess depth and rough opening. Built-in models have specific framing requirements; pull the manual before framing.
- Glass surface temperature. This varies meaningfully between models and brands. If you have young children or pets, check the specification for the exact unit rather than assuming all electric fireplaces stay cool.
- Honest heat expectations. Match the unit's rated output to the room you're actually heating.
Choose electric if…
- There's no gas line, or venting is impractical
- It's a condo, bedroom, office, or basement
- You want ambiance more than heat
- You want the flame running year-round
- You want a shorter, simpler install
Choose gas if…
- The fireplace is meant to heat a large space
- You need it to work during outages
- You want genuine combustion and real flame
- You already have gas service and a workable vent path
