Short answer: The Kingsman ZCV39 and ZCV42 have the same 25,000 BTU maximum input, the same venting and the same options. The ZCV42 is simply bigger: about 4 in. more glass width and 3 in. more glass height, in a framed opening 3 in. wider and about 3 in. taller. Choose by the size of the wall and the room, not by heat.

What is actually different
1. The size of the fire
The ZCV42's viewing area is roughly a quarter larger than the ZCV39's. In a great room or an open plan, that extra glass is what keeps the fireplace from looking small on a long wall. In a standard living room or a bedroom, the ZCV39 already reads as a large fireplace.
2. The wall it needs
The ZCV42 needs a rough opening 42 1/2 in. wide and 41 in. high, against 39 1/2 in. by 37 7/8 in. for the ZCV39. Depth is the same. The extra 3 in. of height matters most if you are planning a mantel or a TV above, because everything above the fireplace moves up with it.
3. The price
The ZCV42 starts about $350 above the ZCV39 with millivolt ignition. With IPI ignition the gap is wider in our current pricing, so compare the exact configuration you want on the two product pages.
What is the same
- Heat. Both are rated at 25,000 BTU maximum with tempered glass. The bigger firebox does not mean more heat, so the ZCV42 is not the answer to a cold room.
- Venting. Both use 4 in. / 7 in. direct vent, so the vent plan is the same.
- Look and options. Both are clean-face with no louvers, with the same families of log sets, glass tray media, liners, surrounds and the optional fan kit.
- Ceramic versions. Kingsman builds both sizes with ceramic glass at higher input and efficiency. We can quote either if heat is the priority.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the ZCV39 if the room is a standard living room, primary bedroom or dining room, or if wall height above the fireplace is tight. Read the ZCV39 review or see the ZCV39 product page.
- Choose the ZCV42 if the fireplace sits on a long wall in a great room or open plan and needs the scale. See the ZCV42 product page.
- Choose neither if you mainly need heat. Ask us about the ceramic versions, or use our sizing guide to match output to the room.
One shipping note: we cannot currently sell or ship the ZCV42 to New York State.
Frequently asked questions
Does the ZCV42 put out more heat than the ZCV39?
No. With tempered glass both are rated at 25,000 BTU maximum input.
How much bigger is the ZCV42?
The viewing area is 37 1/8 in. by 31 3/4 in., against 33 in. by 28 5/8 in. for the ZCV39. The framing is 3 in. wider and about 3 in. taller, with the same depth.
Do they use the same vent pipe?
Yes. Both use 4 in. / 7 in. direct vent.
Can I mount a TV above either one?
Both can be installed with a ventilated chase that keeps the wall above cooler. For the ZCV42, Kingsman lists a minimum enclosure height of 72 in. for that setup. Take the ZCV39's figure from its manual and plan it with your installer before framing.
