Wall-Mounted vs Recessed Electric Fireplace: Do You Have to Open the Wall?

Napoleon Astound FlexMount 50 linear electric fireplace mounted on a living room wall

Short answer: No, you don't always have to open the wall. A wall-mounted electric fireplace hangs on the surface, like the Napoleon TriVista Pictura 60. A recessed electric fireplace sits inside the wall, and some thin models fit an ordinary 2x4 or 2x6 wall with no build-out. Deeper built-in units need a framed chase that sticks out into the room. The deciding number is the unit's framing depth compared with the depth of your wall.

Four ways to install an electric fireplace

Most of the confusion comes from four terms that get used loosely. Here is what each one means in practice.

Style What it means Wall work Suits
Wall-mounted (surface) Unit hangs on the finished wall and projects into the room Mounting into studs or anchors; plan the outlet or wiring Renters, finished rooms, quick projects
Partly recessed Part of the unit sits in the wall cavity, the rest stands proud, usually finished with a trim kit Cut an opening in an existing wall 2x4 walls where a flush install won't fit
Flush recessed Face of the unit sits level with the finished wall Cut an opening; the wall must be deep enough Clean media walls, 2x6 walls, thin units in 2x4 walls
Built-in (framed chase) A bump-out or false wall is framed around a deeper unit New framing, drywall and finish New builds, remodels, feature walls with a mantel or TV

Start with your wall depth

A nominal 2x4 stud is 3-1/2 inches deep and a 2x6 is 5-1/2 inches. Many interior walls are framed with 2x4s. Compare those figures with the framing depth the manufacturer lists for the unit, and you know which install styles are open to you.

  • Framing depth of 3-1/2 in. or less: can recess into a standard 2x4 wall.
  • Up to 5-1/2 in.: flush in a 2x6 wall, or partly recessed in a 2x4 wall if the maker offers a trim option.
  • More than 5-1/2 in.: needs a built-out chase, or a wall-mount option if the model has one.

Models we carry, by how they install

These figures come from each manufacturer's published specifications. Framing depths are minimums; confirm them in the installation manual for your exact size before anyone cuts drywall.

Model Install options (manufacturer) Depth figures What that means for your wall
Napoleon TriVista Pictura 60 Wall mount Not built into the wall Hangs on the surface and plugs in; glass on three sides
Napoleon Astound FlexMount 50 Wall mounted, partly recessed (3-sided) or fully recessed (1, 2 or 3-sided) Unit 7 in. deep; minimum framing depth 7-1/2 in. Hang it on the wall now. A full recess needs 2 in. more depth than a 2x6 wall, so plan a bump-out
SimpliFire Allusion Slim Recessed into a 2x4 or 2x6 wall; optional Crestline wall-mount surround for the 50 and 60 Heat & Glo lists a four-inch depth The thinnest recessed option here: no build-out in a standard wall
Dimplex Ignite XL Fully recessed in 2x6; 2x4 with optional trim Unit 5-7/8 in.; framing depth 5-1/2 in. (2x6) or 3-1/2 in. (2x4) Flush in a 2x6 wall; partly recessed with trim in a 2x4 wall
Dimplex Ignite Evolve Flush into a 2x6 wall, with or without trim See our Evolve wall depth and framing guide Ideal for a new 2x6 media wall; certified for covered outdoor installs too
Napoleon Astound Built-In (50, 62, 74, 96 in.) Recessed install required Minimum framing depth 13-3/8 in. About 9-7/8 in. deeper than a 2x4 wall, so it goes in a framed chase

Wall-mounted: no framing, but plan the power

A wall-mounted unit is the fastest route to a fire on the wall, and it leaves the wall intact if you move. The tradeoff is that it sits proud of the wall, and the cord or wiring has to be planned so it doesn't hang in view.

  • TriVista Pictura 60: Napoleon describes it as a three-sided wall-hanging fireplace that plugs in at 120 V. It is rated at 1,500 W with up to 5,000 BTU of heat, and the flame can run without the heater.
  • Astound FlexMount 50: the flexible choice if you want to hang it now and recess it in a future remodel. Napoleon lists up to 10,000 BTU of heat. Ask us to confirm the wiring for the setup you choose.
  • Allusion Slim 50 or 60 with the Crestline surround: SimpliFire's wall-mount surround kits (WMK-WH-ALLS50 and WMK-WH-ALLS60) turn the recessed Slim into a wall-hung unit. The surround can hide a wall outlet behind it. SimpliFire's instructions cap items on the surround shelf at 50 lb and don't allow it on drywall thinner than 1/2 in. unless every anchor point lands on framing. We don't list the kit online, so ask us if you want one.

If a TV is going above a wall-mounted unit, check both the fireplace manual and the TV maker's guidance on mounting above a heater. Our TV sizing guide covers proportions.

Recessed in a standard wall: the clean look without a bump-out

If you can cut into the wall but don't want to build it out, look for a unit whose framing depth fits your studs.

  • In a 2x4 wall: the Allusion Slim is made for it. The Ignite XL also goes into a 2x4 wall with its optional trim, but the unit is deeper than a 2x4 cavity, so it stands slightly proud rather than flush.
  • In a 2x6 wall: the Ignite XL and Ignite Evolve sit flush. Dimplex also describes an edgeless finish for the Ignite XL, with stone, brick or similar materials brought up to the unit.

Cutting a wide opening in an existing wall may mean cutting studs, so have a builder confirm the header before you start. Our Allusion Slim vs Platinum vs Edge comparison covers the SimpliFire options in more detail.

Built-in chase: the most design freedom

A framed chase lets you use deeper units, add a mantel or hide the wiring completely. The Napoleon Astound Built-In needs at least 13-3/8 in. of framing depth, and a fully recessed Astound FlexMount needs at least 7-1/2 in. Both are deeper than any standard stud wall, so the chase is part of the plan from the start. This is the usual route for a media wall.

Traditional-style fireboxes such as the Dimplex Revillusion and Ignite Aspire are built-in units too. Check their framing specifications, or send us your wall details, before you frame.

Before you order: a quick checklist

  • Find out whether the wall is framed with 2x4 or 2x6 studs; house plans or your builder can tell you.
  • Note the width available and anything above the fireplace (TV, mantel, shelving).
  • Decide whether you want heat. On models with a 240 V option, such as the Ignite XL, 240 V gives more heat, and it is easiest to run while the wall is open. See our electrical requirements guide.
  • Check where the outlet or junction box will go for the model you pick, using its manual.
  • For a bump-out, confirm the chase dimensions against the manual's framing drawing for your exact size.

Common questions

Can I recess an electric fireplace in a 2x4 wall?

Yes, with the right model. The SimpliFire Allusion Slim installs directly into a 2x4 wall. The Dimplex Ignite XL fits a 2x4 wall with its optional trim, but it won't sit fully flush.

Which electric fireplace hangs on the wall with no framing?

Among the models we carry, the Napoleon TriVista Pictura 60 and the Astound FlexMount 50 are made for wall mounting, and the Allusion Slim 50 and 60 can be wall-mounted with SimpliFire's Crestline surround kit.

Is a recessed electric fireplace better than a wall-mounted one?

Neither is better in general. Recessed looks more built-in and saves projection into the room. Wall-mounted usually needs less construction and leaves the wall intact. Choose based on your wall and whether you can cut into it.

Do I need an electrician?

For plug-in wall-mounted units, you usually just need a suitable outlet in the right spot, per the manual. Hardwired installs, new circuits and 240 V wiring are a job for a licensed electrician under local code.
