TV Above a Gas Fireplace: What Kingsman's Manuals Allow

Kingsman ZCVRB47 47-inch linear gas fireplace in a light marble tile wall with a wood mantel

Short answer: often yes, but the fireplace's own manual decides it, not a general rule. Kingsman's current installation manuals for the 47-inch (ZCVRB47) and 60-inch (ZCVRB60) linear gas fireplaces say plainly that a TV is allowed above the fireplace, whether the chase is vented or not. A vented chase is the better setup for a TV: Kingsman says it keeps the wall above the fireplace cooler and allows a lower mantel. For other models, check the manual's mantel and framing pages before you plan the TV wall, and remember that Kingsman's manuals state televisions are not covered by the fireplace warranty.

Why a TV above a gas fireplace needs planning

A direct vent gas fireplace sends its heat out through the glass front and, inside the wall, warms the framed box around it (the chase). Warm air rises, so the wall directly above the fireplace is where a TV, a mantel and any electronics feel that heat. That is why manuals spell out mantel heights, materials that must be non-combustible, and minimum ceiling and enclosure heights.

Two things are worth separating:

  • Fire safety is about clearances to combustibles, the mantel chart and the non-combustible zone. These come from the fireplace manual and your local code, and they are not optional.
  • TV comfort and lifespan is about how warm the wall gets and how high the screen sits. The fireplace manual tells you what Kingsman allows; your TV's own manual lists the temperature range the TV is designed for.

What Kingsman's manuals say about TVs

We read the current Kingsman installation manuals for the gas fireplaces Lumiflares carries. Here is what each one says in its text about a TV above the unit.

Model TV above allowed? What the manual adds
Kingsman 47" Linear (ZCVRB47) Yes, with an unvented or a vented chase Vented chase lowers the mantel height. TV should sit at least 1" away from the vented chase opening. Minimum enclosure and ceiling height 70" from the bottom of the fireplace.
Kingsman 60" Linear (ZCVRB60) Yes, with an unvented or a vented chase; the vented-chase section marks it "recommended" TV at least 1" away from the vented chase opening. Minimum enclosure and ceiling height 76" from the bottom of the fireplace.
Skyline 36" (ZCVRB3622) and Solara II 36" (ZCV3622) Not stated in the text The shared manual mentions a TV recess in its framing drawing but gives no TV guidance in words. Ask us before you frame.
Heritage 36" (HBZDV3624/3628) Not stated in the text Mantel dimensions are in the manual's drawings. Plan the TV around the mantel chart and ask us to confirm.

Both linear manuals also say televisions are not covered by the fireplace warranty. In practice, that means the fireplace maker is not responsible for a TV that runs warm, so it pays to choose the cooler setup from the start.

Vented chase vs unvented chase

The ZCVRB47 and ZCVRB60 can be installed two ways. In an unvented chase, the fireplace's ventilation plates stay in place and the face of the fireplace must be covered with non-combustible board such as concrete board. In a vented chase, the plates are removed and the heat that builds up in the chase leaves through a Kingsman grill or opening near the ceiling.

Unvented chase Vented chase
Wall above the fireplace Warmer Cooler; Kingsman calls this useful for TVs or artwork
Mantel height Higher Lower
Covering over the fireplace face Must be non-combustible (for example, concrete board) Kingsman says combustible materials can be used in some instances; follow the manual's exact requirements
Extra work None beyond the standard framing Remove the ventilation plates and add the specified grill or opening at the top of the chase, sized per the manual

If you are building a new TV wall around a 47" or 60" Kingsman linear, the vented chase is usually worth the extra grill. It is a framing decision, so it has to be made before drywall, not after.

How much heat are we talking about?

Kingsman's brochures list these input ranges. Higher input means more heat in the room and in the chase, which is one more reason to plan the wall around the manual.

Model Natural gas input (BTU/h) Propane input (BTU/h)
ZCVRB3622 (36") 12,000 to 17,500 14,000 to 17,500
ZCVRB47 (47") 16,500 to 24,500 20,500 to 24,500
ZCVRB60 (60") 23,000 to 35,000 28,000 to 35,000

All three have Hi/Low valves, so you can run the flame lower on evenings when the TV is on. If you are unsure which size suits the room, our gas fireplace sizing guide and Kingsman Linear 36 vs 47 vs 60 comparison walk through it.

What about heat shields and deflectors?

"Heat shield for TV above fireplace" is a common search, and there are aftermarket products for it. None of the Kingsman manuals we read list a heat deflector for these models. Anything fixed to the fireplace, its face or its required clearance zones should be approved by Kingsman or your installer first. For a new build, a vented chase is the approach Kingsman itself documents for keeping the wall cooler.

Planning checklist for a TV over a gas fireplace

  1. Pick the fireplace with the TV in mind. If the TV is the priority, start with a model whose manual addresses TVs, such as the ZCVRB47 or ZCVRB60.
  2. Decide vented or unvented before framing. Mark the grill location near the ceiling on the plans if you go vented.
  3. Check the minimum ceiling and enclosure height from the bottom of the fireplace (70" for the ZCVRB47, 76" for the ZCVRB60).
  4. Lay out the mantel from the manual's chart, then place the TV above it. The TV height follows from the mantel, not the other way around.
  5. Keep the TV at least 1" from the vented chase opening on the 47" and 60" linears.
  6. Plan power and low-voltage wiring for the TV with your electrician and installer, so nothing runs where the manual does not allow it.
  7. Read your TV's manual for its operating temperature range and mounting requirements.
  8. Think about viewing height. A screen above a mantel sits higher than one on a console. A full-motion or pull-down mount can help, as long as it clears the mantel and the fireplace's required zones.

When an electric fireplace may suit the wall better

If the TV has to sit low and close to the fire, or there is no way to vent the chase, an electric fireplace is often the simpler choice for a media wall, since it needs no gas line or venting. Our guides to what size electric fireplace goes under a 55, 65, 75 or 85-inch TV and designing a media wall with an electric fireplace cover that route. Follow that model's own manual for TV and mantel guidance too.

Questions buyers ask

Can you mount a TV above a gas fireplace?

Yes, when the fireplace manual allows it. Kingsman's ZCVRB47 and ZCVRB60 manuals allow a TV above in both chase types. For other models, follow the manual's mantel and framing pages, and ask us if the text does not cover TVs.

Will a blower keep the TV cooler?

Kingsman's manuals don't make that claim, so we won't either. A fan kit moves warm air from the fireplace into the room; see our gas fireplace blower guide for which models take one.

Is a TV covered by the fireplace warranty?

No. The ZCVRB47 and ZCVRB60 manuals say televisions are not covered by the fireplace warranty.
