Electric Fireplace in a Bedroom: Safety, Noise, Timers and Placement

Dimplex Revillusion electric fireplace built into a bedroom wall

Short answer: Yes, an electric fireplace can work well in a bedroom, and it is the simplest fireplace type for one because it needs no vent, chimney or gas line. What matters is the bedroom-specific planning: keep beds, pillows and curtains at least 3 feet from the front, plug it straight into a properly grounded wall outlet (or hardwire it), use the sleep timer, and run the flame with the heater off when you want the quietest room. The manufacturer's manual for your exact model has the final word on clearances and wiring.

Why electric suits a bedroom

Bedrooms are usually smaller, quieter rooms where you want the look of a fire without adding a vent run or gas work. Electric fireplaces fit that brief for three reasons:

  • No venting. There is no combustion, so there is no flue, termination cap or makeup air to plan.
  • Flame without heat. Many models let you run the flame effect with the heater off, which matters in a room you want cool for sleeping.
  • Shallow installs. Many linear models recess into a standard 2x6 wall, and some can hang on the wall with no framing at all.

The tradeoff is that the heater on most models is supplemental. SimpliFire's Allusion Platinum manual, for example, states plainly that the unit is not intended for use as a primary heat source.

The bedroom checklist

  1. Keep a 3-foot zone in front clear. Dimplex's Revillusion manual says to keep furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothes and curtains at least 3 feet (0.9 m) from the front of the fireplace. SimpliFire's Allusion Platinum manual sets the same 3-foot minimum to combustibles in front. Measure from the glass to the foot of the bed, a reading chair or the curtain line before you choose a wall.
  2. Don't cover the front or block the air openings. Dimplex's manuals warn against covering or obstructing the front and against blocking air intakes or exhaust. No throws draped over a mantel edge, and no pillows stacked on a hearth ledge.
  3. Plug directly into the wall, or hardwire. Dimplex and SimpliFire both say not to use an extension cord, and SimpliFire adds no relocatable power strips. If the only outlet is behind the bed, plan for an electrician rather than a cord run.
  4. Use the sleep timer. The Dimplex and SimpliFire models below can shut off on their own after anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 or 9 hours, depending on the model.
  5. Decide how you'll use heat. NFPA's space heater safety guidance says space heaters should be turned off when you leave the room or go to bed. An electric fireplace's heater is a fan-forced heater, so the same habit makes sense: let the timer shut the heater off before you sleep, or run flame only.
  6. Think about children. The manuals call for extreme caution when the heater is used near children or left operating unattended, and Dimplex says young children should be supervised so they don't play with the appliance.

Noise: what you'll hear

Electric fireplaces don't publish decibel ratings, so the honest guide is how the heater works. The heater uses a fan, and the fan runs while the heater is on. Dimplex's Revillusion manual adds that when you turn the heat off, the fan keeps running for a 2-minute cool-down and then shuts off completely; the Ignite XL manual describes the same 2-minute cool-down after shutdown.

So for the quietest bedroom, warm the room before bed and let the timer or the heat button stop the heater, then enjoy the flame on its own. If a heater gets noticeably loud, SimpliFire's troubleshooting section lists fan interference or a failing blower motor as causes, which is a service question rather than something to live with.

Four models that suit a bedroom

These are current Lumiflares models whose bedroom-relevant features we could confirm in manufacturer documents. Heat output is shown at 120V, the usual plug-in setting.

Model Heat at 120V Power hookup Sleep timer Heat off Install
Dimplex Revillusion 24 (RBF24DLX) 1,350 W at 77°F, 1,500 W at 32°F Plug-in (3-prong plug installed); hardwire optional 0.5 to 8 h, half-hour steps Separate heat button; fan stops 2 min after heat off Built-in firebox, 24-1/4" W x 22-7/8" H x 12-1/8" D
SimpliFire Allusion Platinum 50 (SF-ALLP50) 1,400 W 6-1/2 ft cord at 120V; hardwire for 120V or 240V (2,800 W) 30 min to 9 h Yes, flame runs with heat off Recessed in a 2x6 wall; 0" clearance to floor, sides and top
Dimplex Ignite XL 50 (XLF50) 1,500 W (5,118 BTU) Hardwire 120V or 240V (2,500 W); optional 120V plug kit 30 min to 8 h Yes, plus a Disable Heat setting Recessed in a 2x6 wall, 5-7/8" deep; top at least 8" below the ceiling
Napoleon Astound FlexMount 50 (NEFL50AB) Up to 10,000 BTU (3 kW) maximum, with a half-heat Eco mode Confirm voltage with us before ordering Weekly schedule for heat and color by day Ask us; not stated on Napoleon's spec page Wall-mounted, partly recessed or fully recessed; 7" unit depth

The Ignite XL BTU figure is Dimplex's own (1,500 W x 3.412). Napoleon's figure is the maximum it publishes for the Astound line, not a 120V output.

Who each one suits

  • Revillusion 24 suits a smaller bedroom or a sitting nook where you want a traditional firebox look, and it ships ready to plug in. It is the deepest unit here, so plan the wall or a surround for its 12-1/8" depth. Our Revillusion size guide walks through the sizes.
  • Allusion Platinum 50 suits a primary bedroom wall where you want a slim, modern line of flame and the longest timer of the group. It plugs in at 120V, and SimpliFire lists Wi-Fi app control and adjustable flame brightness, handy when you want a dim glow at night.
  • Ignite XL 50 suits a new build or remodel where an electrician is already running circuits. Its Disable Heat setting is useful if the fireplace is purely for ambiance in a warm climate.
  • Astound FlexMount 50 suits renters or anyone who doesn't want to open a wall, because Napoleon lists a wall-mounted installation with no framing, as well as partly and fully recessed options.

Where to put it in the room

  • Facing the bed is the classic spot, so you see the flame from bed. Check that the foot of the bed sits at least 3 feet from the glass.
  • Below a TV works on a bedroom media wall; see what size electric fireplace goes under a 55 to 85-inch TV for proportions.
  • In a sitting area of a larger primary suite, keep chairs and side tables out of the 3-foot zone.
  • Directly above a bed is the spot to question. Pillows, headboard fabric and bedding end up close to the heater, so confirm the model's clearances in its manual first, or choose another wall.

Power and wiring

A plug-in unit still needs a properly grounded outlet within reach of its cord. Dimplex prefers a dedicated 15 A circuit for the Revillusion 24, and SimpliFire calls for at least a 15 A circuit (20 A recommended) at 120V and a 20 A circuit at 240V for the Allusion Platinum. Bedroom circuits often share outlets with lamps, chargers and a TV, so ask an electrician whether that circuit has room for a 1,400 to 1,500 W heater. Our electrical requirements guide covers 120V vs 240V and outlet placement, and what an electric fireplace costs to run shows the running-cost math.

Questions bedroom buyers ask

Can I leave an electric fireplace on all night?

Not with the heater on. NFPA's guidance for space heaters is to turn them off when you go to bed, and the manuals call for extreme caution whenever a heater is left running unattended. Use the sleep timer so the unit, or at least the heater, is off by the time you're asleep.

Can I use an electric fireplace in summer?

Yes, on models that run the flame with the heater off, such as the Allusion Platinum and Ignite XL above.

Which flame looks best from bed?

That comes down to flame technology and viewing distance. Our comparison of the most realistic electric fireplace technologies explains the differences.
