Linear Electric Fireplaces

Linear electric fireplaces put a wide, low ribbon of flame at the centre of a room — no venting, no gas line, no chimney. They are the format of choice for media walls, because the firebox sits flush in the wall beneath a television and needs only a receptacle roughed into the cavity behind it.

Lumiflares carries linear electric models from Dimplex and Napoleon in widths from 50 to 100 inches, as an authorized dealer for both. Every unit ships with free insured freight delivery and full manufacturer warranty.

1 Choosing a width

— On an open wall, scale to the room. A 50–60 inch firebox suits most living rooms; 74 inches and up reads as a feature wall and needs the space around it to carry the width.

— Under a television, match or slightly exceed the screen width. A 65-inch screen is roughly 57 inches wide, so a 60-inch firebox sits comfortably beneath it.

— Confirm the published clearance to anything heat-sensitive above before framing — the figure is model-specific.

— Check whether your model is plug-in or hardwired, and settle that with your electrician before drywall goes up.

2 Built-in or wall-mounted?

Most linear models can be recessed into the wall so the face sits flush with the surrounding finish — the look that reads as designed rather than added. That requires framing to the model's rough opening and a receptacle inside the cavity.

A few models, including the Napoleon Astound FlexMount, can also hang on the wall surface. That's the simpler retrofit when you'd rather not open the wall, though it always reads as a mounted appliance rather than part of the architecture.

3 Planning a media wall

The decisions that cause expensive rework happen before anything is framed: clearance to the TV, recess depth, receptacle position, and whether the unit needs a dedicated circuit.

Our guide to designing a media wall with electric fireplaces covers clearances, proportions, surround materials and the wiring to rough in early. For the voltage question specifically, see electric fireplace electrical requirements.

How to Choose a Linear Electric Fireplace

A linear electric fireplace needs no flue, no gas line and no combustion air, so almost nothing about your house limits where it goes. That makes the decision a design one: how wide, how it mounts, and how much heat you actually expect from it.

1

Get the Width Right

Width is the decision people most often get wrong, and it is almost always by going too small. A linear fireplace reads as a horizontal band, so it needs to feel deliberate against the wall it sits on rather than marooned in the middle of it.

  • —Mounting under a TV? Match or exceed the TV's width. A 65-inch TV over a 50-inch fireplace looks top-heavy; a 60- or 74-inch unit under the same TV looks intentional.
  • —Standalone feature wall? Roughly half to two-thirds the width of the wall is a reliable starting point.
  • —This collection runs 50 to 100 inches, so there is usually a size that lands where you want rather than forcing a compromise.
2

Built-In, Wall-Mount, or Multi-Sided

  • —Recessed built-in — Sits flush in a framed wall for a seamless, architectural finish. Requires framing, so it suits a remodel or new build. Most of this collection is built this way.
  • —Wall-mount or flexible-mount — Hangs on a finished wall with no framing. The Napoleon Astound FlexMount does both, which is useful if you're not certain yet.
  • —Multi-sided — The Dimplex IgniteXL Bold range is built for corner, bay and peninsula walls where the fire is visible from two or three sides.
3

Be Realistic About Heat

This is where expectations and reality part company. An electric fireplace is supplemental heat for the room it's in — it takes the chill off a living room, it does not replace a furnace. Most people run the flame far more often than the heater.

Output and electrical requirements vary by model, and some units offer a higher-output hardwired configuration alongside the standard plug-in. Both matter to your electrician before the wall is closed up. Full detail: electric fireplace electrical requirements.

4

Dimplex or Napoleon

  • —Dimplex — The IgniteXL range uses the patented Multi-Fire XD flame behind edge-to-edge glass. The Evolve and Ultra series build on the same format with additional flame depth and colour range.
  • —Napoleon — The Astound range leans on a frameless face and app-based control, with WiFi and voice available across the line.

Both are strong. The honest answer is that at this level you're choosing a flame look and a control experience, not a winner — ask us to compare two specific models side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we get asked most about linear electric fireplaces, answered straight.

QDo electric fireplaces need venting or a gas line?

No. There's no combustion, so there's no flue, no chimney, no vent run and no gas line. All the unit needs is electrical supply. That's why a linear electric fireplace can go on an interior wall, in a condo, in a basement or in a bedroom — places where a gas fireplace would be difficult or impossible.

QWill it actually heat my room?

It will take the chill off the room it's in. Treat an electric fireplace as supplemental heat, not a heating system — it won't replace a furnace, and it isn't sized to. Most owners run the flame effect year-round for ambience and use the heater only on cold evenings, which is one of the genuine advantages of the format: you get the fire without the heat when you don't want it.

QWhat electrical supply do I need?

It depends on the model and the configuration. Some units run from a standard plug-in circuit; others offer a higher-output hardwired option that needs a dedicated circuit run by an electrician. This has to be settled before the wall is framed and closed, not after. Our guide to electric fireplace electrical requirements covers what to give your electrician, and we'll confirm the exact requirement for whichever model you're considering.

QCan I mount a TV above it?

Yes, and it's one of the most common installations for this format — electric units don't push the hot flue gases upward that make TV-over-fireplace risky with a wood or gas appliance. Two things to get right: follow the manufacturer's stated clearance above the unit for your specific model, and match the widths. A fireplace noticeably narrower than the TV above it is the single most common proportion mistake in these installs.

QRecessed built-in or wall-mounted?

Recessed gives the cleaner, more architectural result — the unit sits flush in the wall — but it requires framing, so it suits a remodel or new construction. Wall-mounting needs no framing and can be done on a finished wall, which makes it the practical choice in an existing room or a rental. The Napoleon Astound FlexMount supports both, which is worth knowing if you haven't decided how far you want to take the wall.
