Convert an existing masonry fireplace to clean-burning bioethanol in minutes — no construction, no chimney work, no gas line. Each grate ships with its burner included. Measure your fireplace opening and choose Grate 18, 30 or 36, or the Heritage Grate series.

Bioethanol burns clean enough to need no flue, no chimney, no gas line and no electrical connection. That removes most of the constraints that decide a gas or electric install, so the choice comes down to format, size and where it will live.
Pick Your Format
- —Fire tables — A functioning table with fire at its centre, in Fluid Concrete or oiled teak. Bar, dining, lounge and coffee-table heights. Shop fire tables →
- —Fire pits & bowls — Self-contained, portable, no installation. Move it where the evening is. Shop fire pits →
- —Fireplace inserts — Built-in fireboxes for an architectural wall opening, indoors or out. Shop inserts →
- —Burners & fire pit kits — The components themselves, for a surround you or your contractor build. Shop burners →
- —Grates — Drop into an existing masonry fireplace to convert it to bioethanol, with no chimney work. Shop grates →
Match the Burner to the Piece
The burner decides both how the fire looks and how long an evening it gives you — and the two don't move together. The AB8 burns hotter but empties faster; the XL900 runs cooler and lasts longer.
| Burner | Output (max) | Capacity | Burn time | Min. room (indoors) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AB8 (round) | 20,433 BTU/h 12,860 on low | 8 L / 2.1 gal | 7–11 hrs | 4,096 cu ft |
| XL900 (linear) | 15,000 BTU/h | 9 L / 2.4 gal | 8–13 hrs | 3,884 cu ft |
- —AB8 drives the Manhattan 50, Martini 50 and Ark 40. Pick it when you want more heat from a contained, central flame.
- —XL900 drives the Cosmo 50, Wharf 65 and the Gin 90 range. Pick it for a long ribbon of flame and a longer evening on one fill.
- —Twin-burner builds run two burners in parallel. Room-volume requirements apply per burner, so a twin build needs roughly double the room indoors.

Indoors or Out
- —Indoor use has hard requirements — A minimum room volume per burner (see the table above), and the Indoor Safety Tray must be fitted. EcoSmart states the appliance must not be operated indoors without it. AB8 models also need the Burner Efficiency Ring to meet EN 16647.
- —These parts are specified at order — Indoor components are configured when the unit is built, not added later. Tell us the room at the time of purchase.
- —Materials — Fluid Concrete and grade 304 stainless steel are built for weather exposure; oiled teak is used across much of the range.
- —Wind — Outdoors, a toughened glass screen keeps the flame steady. Keep the fire clear of anything that moves in wind — branches, paper, loose fabric.
Codes for ventless appliances vary by jurisdiction. Confirm local requirements, and follow EcoSmart's clearances manual over anything here.
Fuel and Lead Time
- —e-NRG only — EcoSmart's manual states e-NRG is the only fuel to be used in these appliances. Substituting another fuel affects both safety and warranty.
- —Gas versions exist, outdoors only — Several models, including the Manhattan 50 and Cosmo 50, are also built in liquid propane and natural gas at 65,000 BTU/h. EcoSmart rates those configurations for outdoor use only. The units we stock are the bioethanol builds.
- —Lead time — Several configurations are made to order. If you're working to a date, tell us early and we'll confirm current availability before you order.

The questions we get asked most about EcoSmart bioethanol fires, answered with the manufacturer's own figures.
QDo these need a flue, chimney or gas line?
Not in the bioethanol configurations we stock. Bioethanol burns without producing smoke or soot, so there's no flue, no chimney, no gas line and no electrical connection. That's what makes these workable on a terrace, a rooftop, or an interior wall with no services behind it. Note that several models — the Manhattan 50 and Cosmo 50 among them — are also manufactured in liquid propane and natural gas versions at 65,000 BTU/h. EcoSmart rates those gas configurations for outdoor use only.
QHow much heat do they give off, and how long do they burn?
It depends on the burner, and the trade-off is worth understanding before you choose a model. The AB8 round burner (Manhattan 50, Martini 50, Ark 40) is rated at 20,433 BTU/h at maximum and 12,860 BTU/h on low, holds 8 litres (2.1 gallons) and runs 7–11 hours depending on setting. The XL900 linear burner (Cosmo 50, Wharf 65, Gin 90) is rated at 15,000 BTU/h, holds 9 litres (2.4 gallons) and runs 8–13 hours. So the AB8 gives you more heat, the XL900 gives you a longer evening on one fill. Both are listed by EcoSmart as heating over 645 sq ft indoors at maximum.
QCan I use one indoors? What's required?
Yes, in the bioethanol configuration — but indoor use carries specific requirements from EcoSmart, and they are not optional. There is a minimum room volume per burner: 4,096 cu ft (116 m³) for the AB8, and 3,884 cu ft (110 m³) for the XL900. The Indoor Safety Tray must be fitted; EcoSmart's clearances manual states the appliance must not be operated indoors without it. On AB8 models, the Burner Efficiency Ring is also required to meet EN 16647. These parts are specified at the time of order rather than added later, so tell us if the unit is going indoors. Local code for ventless appliances also varies by jurisdiction — confirm yours before building anything in.
QWhat fuel do they use?
e-NRG bioethanol, and only e-NRG. EcoSmart's manual is explicit that it is the only fuel to be used in these appliances. Substituting another bioethanol or a different fuel type is outside the manufacturer's instructions and will affect both safety and your warranty.
QWhich burner or format should I choose?
Start with the format. A fire table gives you a usable surface with fire at the centre. A fire pit or bowl is self-contained and portable. An insert is a built-in firebox for a finished wall opening. A burner or fire pit kit is the component itself, for a surround you or your contractor build. Then the burner follows the model: round AB-series burners give a contained flame and drive the Manhattan 50, Martini 50 and Ark 40; the linear XL900 gives a long ribbon of flame and drives the Cosmo 50, Wharf 65 and Gin 90 range.
QHow long will delivery take, and what warranty applies?
