Kingsman ZCVRB3622 Review: Is the Skyline 36 Linear Gas Fireplace Right for Your Room?

Short answer: The Kingsman ZCVRB3622, which Kingsman calls the Skyline, is a 36-inch clean-face linear direct vent gas fireplace rated at 17,500 BTU. It suits bedrooms, home offices and small to mid-size living rooms where you want a modern ribbon of flame with moderate supplemental heat. If your main goal is heating a large open room, it is the wrong unit, and the last section points to better fits.

The heat: what 17,500 BTU really means

17,500 BTU is the gas input on high, for both natural gas and propane. Kingsman is explicit that this appliance is approved as supplemental room heat or as a decorative appliance and should not be counted as primary heat in a heating calculation.

Two details matter more than the headline number:

  • The low setting is not very low. On natural gas the burner turns down to 12,000 BTU, about two thirds of maximum. On propane it only drops to 14,000 BTU. In a small, well-insulated bedroom, plan on running it for ambiance in shorter sessions or pairing it with a thermostat remote.
  • There is no blower in the box. Without the optional Z36FK fan kit the unit heats mostly by radiation from the glass. The fan kit is heat-activated with a variable-speed wall control and needs household power at the fireplace.

Where it can be installed

The ZCVRB3622 is a zero-clearance fireplace. Framing can meet the stand-offs on the back, sides and top, and the unit can sit directly on a wood floor. It is not an insert and does not need an existing chimney.

  • Front clearance: 36 in. to combustibles in front of the glass.
  • Hearth: none required. If it sits on carpet or another combustible surface other than wood flooring, a metal or wood panel the full width and depth of the unit goes underneath.
  • Enclosure height: a minimum of 60 in. from the bottom of the fireplace as shipped. A low enclosure of 46 1/2 in. is possible on natural gas when the installer removes the factory flue restrictor. On propane the lowest enclosure is 58 in.
  • Wall finish: drywall may run up to the edge of the fireplace, but anything covering the face of the unit must be non-combustible. Kingsman recommends cement board around the full perimeter and warns that light paint colors can discolor from heat.
  • TV above: the framing diagram allows the wall above the unit to be recessed up to 3 in. for a TV. Mantel and projection clearances depend on depth, so take them from the mantel page of the manual.
  • Rooms: certified for bedrooms and bed-sitting rooms, and for manufactured homes in the US, subject to local code.

Venting: the part that decides whether it fits your wall

The unit vents through a 4 in. inner / 7 in. outer co-axial pipe from the top. Kingsman flex venting is approved, and so are several rigid systems with an adapter.

  • Out the side wall: the vent has to rise before it turns. As shipped, the horizontal vent centerline sits at least 54 in. above the base of the fireplace. With the flue restrictor removed that drops to 33 in. on natural gas and 45 in. on propane.
  • Horizontal run: the more vertical rise, the longer the horizontal run allowed. A 5 ft rise allows 8 ft, a 6 ft rise allows 12 ft, and 7 ft or more allows the 20 ft maximum. Every foot of horizontal run needs 1/4 in. of upward slope.
  • Through the roof: up to 43 ft of vertical vent.

If your wall cannot give the vent its rise, tell us before ordering. It is the most common reason a linear fireplace plan changes.

Ignition: millivolt or IPI

Millivolt keeps a standing pilot and needs no household power, so it runs through an outage. Proflame 1 IPI lights the pilot only when you call for flame, which saves gas when the fireplace is off, and it runs on its battery backup pack if the power fails. The IPI system can also be switched to a continuous pilot for cold weather. Our ignition comparison covers the trade-offs in detail.

What is included, and what is extra

Included: the firebox with linear burner, 5 lb of bronze fire glass, safety screen, Low-E tempered glass and an on/off wall switch.

Sold separately: venting, a remote control (millivolt models also need the DCHS heat shield for the receiver), the Z36FK fan kit, the surround trim in black or stainless steel (36 in. W x 22 7/8 in. H), and the ULK2 accent light kit.

Limitations to know before you buy

  • Heat output is moderate, and the fan that helps distribute it costs extra.
  • Only Kingsman-approved glass media may be used, to a maximum of 5 lb. Substituting other glass can change the flame and is not covered by warranty.
  • Installation must be done by a qualified gas installer. In Massachusetts that means a plumber or gas fitter licensed by the Commonwealth, a listed T-handle shut-off valve and a carbon monoxide detector that meets the state requirements.
  • We cannot currently sell or ship this model to New York State.

Price

As of October 2026 the ZCVRB3622 starts at $2,681.99 for natural gas with millivolt ignition and $3,131.99 with IPI. Propane and remote packages add to that. See current pricing on the ZCVRB3622 product page.

Who should buy it, and who should not

A good fit if you have a wall around four feet wide or more, want a clean modern flame without louvers, and need supplemental heat for one room.

Look elsewhere if the fireplace has to carry a large or open-plan space. The same linear family comes in 47 in. at 24,500 BTU and 60 in. at 35,000 BTU. Our 36 vs 47 vs 60 comparison shows how the three differ. If you are replacing an existing wood fireplace, you need an insert instead: see zero-clearance vs insert.
