Short answer: The Kingsman HBZDV3628 and HBZDV3624 fit the same 36-inch framed opening and look the same from the sofa. The 3628 burns more gas (28,000 BTU against 24,000 BTU on natural gas), has ceramic glass and is more efficient. The 3624 costs about $918 less and turns down much lower. Choose the 3628 for a living room you want to warm; choose the 3624 for a bedroom, a smaller room or an ambiance-first install.

What is actually different
1. Heat output and how far it turns down
The 3628's extra 4,000 BTU is the headline, but the low setting matters more in daily use. On natural gas the 3624 turns down to 14,000 BTU, a little under 60 percent of its maximum. The 3628 only turns down to 20,000 BTU, about 70 percent of its maximum.
In other words, the 3628 on low puts out nearly as much as the 3624 on high. If you want long, comfortable evenings with the fire on in a modest room, the 3624 gives you more room to work with.
2. Glass
The 3628 uses ceramic glass, which tolerates higher temperatures and passes more radiant heat into the room. The 3624 uses tempered glass. If the glass on a 3628 ever needs replacing, it must be ceramic.
3. Efficiency
Kingsman's published fireplace efficiency figures put the 3628 in the low 60s and the 3624 in the low 50s. More of the gas you burn in the 3628 ends up as heat in the room.
4. Price
The 3628 starts about $918 above the 3624 in the same configuration. The Clean View front and IPI ignition are extra on both.
What is the same
- Framing, viewing area and venting, so the wall and vent plan do not change.
- Zero clearance to the stand-offs, 60 in. minimum from the bottom of the fireplace to the ceiling, and no mandatory hearth.
- The dual burner, the 8-piece burnt oak log set in our configurations, and the choice of black louver or Clean View front.
- The optional Z36FK fan kit and the same remote controls.
- Both are rated for supplemental heat, not as a primary heat source, and both are certified for bedrooms.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the HBZDV3624 if the fireplace is going in a bedroom, office or smaller den, if the look matters more than the heat, or if budget is tight. See the HBZDV3624 product page.
- Choose the HBZDV3628 if it is going in a main living room or a colder part of the house and you want it to take the edge off the heating load. Read the full HBZDV3628 review or see the HBZDV3628 product page.

Frequently asked questions
Do the HBZDV3624 and HBZDV3628 use the same framing?
Yes. With the louvered front both frame at 36 3/8 in. W x 35 in. H x 17 in. D.
Is the HBZDV3628 worth the extra money?
If you will use the fireplace for heat in a larger room, yes: you get more output, ceramic glass and better efficiency. If it is mainly for ambiance or a small room, the 3624 is the better value.
Can I run the 3628 on low in a small room?
You can, but low fire is still 20,000 BTU on natural gas. The 3624's low fire of 14,000 BTU is easier to live with in a small space.
Can I upgrade a 3624 to ceramic glass later?
Kingsman's manual allows tempered or ceramic replacement glass on the 3624. That does not change its rated input.
