Use the list that matches your project. A tape measure and two minutes is all it takes — round to the nearest 1/4 inch.
Putting an insert into an existing fireplace
- Front width of the fireplace opening
- Rear width — many masonry fireplaces taper toward the back
- Height of the opening, front and back
- Depth from the front face to the back wall
- Hearth extension — how far the hearth projects into the room
Building a fireplace into a wall
- Wall width available for the fireplace
- Wall depth — is it 2x4 or 2x6 framing, or can you build a chase?
- Height from the floor to where you want the fireplace centred
- What's above — TV, mantel, artwork, and how high
- Exterior wall? Matters for venting on gas models
Corner installation
- Across the corner — the diagonal face available
- Along each wall — measured from the corner out, both sides

- If gas: does the home run on natural gas or propane?
- If electric: is there a dedicated circuit at that wall, or will an electrician be running one?
